More about this artwork

"Leaf Cup" by Hannah Borger Overbeck is a delicate and beautifully detailed depiction of a plant, possibly of the genus Smallanthus, initially painted around the early 20th century. The artwork conveys a botanical illustration style, focusing on the intricate natural details of the plant's anatomy. The painting illustrates a stem with several leaves and multiple blooming and non-blooming flowers. The colors used are subtle yet distinct, emphasizing the yellow of the flowers while the leaves are rendered in shades of green and gray. The delicate lines and gentle shading suggest the texture and delicacy of the plant’s leaves and petals. The background is a muted blue, which contrasts gently with the foreground, making the plant the focal point of the composition. An interesting aspect of this artwork is how Overbeck has included a border and text block within the painting that reads "Leaf Cup." These elements give the painting an almost scientific, documentative character, reminiscent of traditional botanical prints used for educational or record-keeping purposes. This attention to detail not only reflects Overbeck’s artistic skill but also her appreciation and study of nature’s subtle beauties.
