More about this artwork

"Rosehearty Pier" by Alfred William Finch is a dynamic and textured expression of a coastal scene. The painting captures the vigorous movements and the vibrant colors of the sea set against a beautifully complex sky streaked with yellows, blues, and whites. The sea, depicted in shades of green and blue, churns with white frothy waves, lending a sense of raw, natural energy to the scene. The composition includes a pier on the right-hand side where a group of small figures can be seen, possibly engaging in fishing or simply enjoying the view. The pier, with its reddish-brown tones, contrasts starkly against the deep blues and greens of the ocean, anchoring the scene visually and thematically. Beside the pier, the silhouette of a large dark structure, likely a building or warehouse, adds a sense of scale and human presence to the scene. In the background, just off the coast, two sailboats with their sails billowing make their way across the water, possibly fighting against the strong winds. The sky above, a tapestry of light and color, complements the tumultuous sea, suggesting a narrative of natural forces at play.Overall, Finch's use of bold, impressionistic strokes and a vivid palette conveys not just the visual splendor of Rosehearty Pier but also the invigorating atmosphere of a breezy day by the sea. This painting visually encapsulates both the beauty and the perpetual motion of life at the edge of the water.

Alfred William Finch (1854-1930) was a Neo-Impressionist artist born to British parents in Brussels, Belgium. His works utilized the color palette and Pointillism technique, which were shared by other significant figures of the Neo-Impressionism movement, including Paul Signac, Camille Pissarro, and Georges Seurat. Finch was among the founding members of Les XX (Les Vingt), a group of twenty artists based in Brussels that challenged antiquated and conservative artistic traditions and academism. The group held annual art exhibitions, greatly influencing the development of Neo-Impressionism. In his later years, Alfred William Finch also produced ceramics and pottery, decorated with a fusion of his familiar Neo-Impressionism, Arts and Crafts, and Belgian Art Nouveau styles. His artworks primarily portray the atmospheric beauty of nature and the countryside along the Channel coast. Alfred William Finch spent the majority of his artistic career in Helsinki, where he passed away in 1930.
