More about this artwork

The painting titled "Autumn" by Kogyo Tsukioka is a delicate and serene portrayal of the season. It shows a natural scene composed of elegantly arching plants and falling leaves against a plain, textured background that subtly suggests the expanse of an open field or a gentle sky.On the left, a vine with robust green leaves and small purple flowers gracefully stretches across the scene, conveying a sense of growth and lingering life even as the season changes. This contrasts beautifully with the predominant theme on the right — a cluster of thin, bending grass or reeds that carry both vibrant green and warm russet tones in their foliage and seeds. These plants evoke the typical reedy vegetation often found in wetlands or marshes that have begun to change color in response to cooler temperatures. The scene is also adorned with several small, intricately depicted leaves, shown mid-fall, scattered across the composition. These leaves, with their detailed veining and varied autumnal hues of brown and red, add a dynamic element to the otherwise tranquil and somewhat sparse arrangement. Their inclusion not only enriches the textural complexity of the artwork but also enhances the feeling of a gentle and quiet autumn breeze.Overall, Kogyo Tsukioka's painting is a refined reflection of autumn, capturing its subtle beauty and transient nature through a poignant yet understated composition.

Kogyo Tsukioka (1869-1927) was a Japanese painter, woodblock print artist, and the adopted son of famous ukiyo-e artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. His work focused on traditional Noh theater, a classical Japanese dance-drama, documenting performances through over 550 woodblock prints decorated with gold and silver.  He also painted scenes of nature and from the Sino-Japanese war.
