More about this artwork

The painting titled "Tree And Chrysanthemums" by Kogyo Tsukioka is a serene and beautifully executed artwork that captures the essence of nature and flora in a stylized manner. The artwork features a dark, twisting tree that serves as the central figure, with its branches stretching dynamically across the canvas. The tree's trunk and branches are depicted in a deep, almost black tone, detailed with smaller, knotted growths and spots that add texture and depth.Around and beneath this central tree, lush chrysanthemums in white and yellow bloom profusely. The artist has portrayed these flowers with a remarkable level of detail, showing individual petals and leaves in varying shades of white, cream, yellow, and hints of lavender. The presence of both blooming flowers and those in bud stages suggests a scene captured in the fullness of growth, perhaps in late spring or early summer. The background of the painting is subtly divided into two different zones by undulating lines of blue, which could be interpreted as water or simply stylistic elements to create a sense of depth and division. The upper background is a lighter shade, possibly suggesting a gentle sky or a distant plane. This composition, with its combination of naturalistic elements and stylized presentation, showcases Kogyo Tsukioka's skill in blending traditional Japanese artistic techniques with his own unique vision, thereby creating a peaceful and evocative piece that invites viewers to contemplate the quiet beauty of nature.

Kogyo Tsukioka (1869-1927) was a Japanese painter, woodblock print artist, and the adopted son of famous ukiyo-e artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. His work focused on traditional Noh theater, a classical Japanese dance-drama, documenting performances through over 550 woodblock prints decorated with gold and silver.  He also painted scenes of nature and from the Sino-Japanese war.
