More about this artwork
The painting "Divan Japonais" by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec presents a vibrant and dynamic scene set in the famous Parisian nightclub, Le Divan Japonais. Created in 1892-93, this artwork is a fine example of Lautrec's distinctive style characterized by bold outlines and a limited but impactful color palette. In "Divan Japonais," the artist uses stark black and yellow tones to capture the energy and mood of the Parisian cabaret scene. The central figure in the painting, dramatically clad in black with a flamboyant hat, is singer Jane Avril, a favorite subject of the artist. Avril is depicted in profile, her face turned as if she is engaging with someone out of our view. Her posture, elegantly seated with one arm extended, suggests both relaxation and attentiveness to the performance. To the right of Avril, in the foreground, we see the silhouette of a portly man with a blonde beard, who is identified as the critic Édouard Dujardin, known for coining the term "stream of consciousness". He is shown listening intently, his face captured in profile, which accentuates his absorbed expression. The background of the painting features another figure, a cancan dancer with her leg kicked high.

Henri de Toulouse–Lautrec (1864–1901), was an aristocratic alcoholic French artist known for his socially unacceptable lifestyle. He observed and documented the Parisian nightlife through his post-impressionist artworks. Sharing a similar style as other well-known French artists such as Paul Cézanne and Georges Seurat, he created memorable works of art depicting the lifestyle that he enjoyed before passing at a young age.
