More about this artwork

This painting by Edward Burne-Jones, titled "Portrait of Georgiana Burne-Jones," captures a very evocative image of the artist's wife, Georgiana. The portrait depicts her at the age of 22, as indicated by the inscription "Aetatis suae XXII" which means "at the age of 22" in Latin.Georgiana is shown with her hands gracefully clasped in front of her, adding a gentle elegance to her posture. Her gaze is direct but has a soft, introspective quality, suggesting a serene or contemplative mood. Her facial expression is delicate and slight, characterized by her pale skin and the subtle hue of her lips. The color palette is relatively muted, primarily consisting of dark tones, which helps to focus attention on her face and hands. Her attire is simple yet elegant; she wears a dark dress with a red necklace that provides a striking contrast against the dark background and her dark clothing. This use of color accentuates her neckline and adds a visual interest to the composition. The texture of her dress suggests a soft, possibly velvet material, adding a sense of depth and richness to the visual experience.Overall, Edward Burne-Jones' portrait of his wife, Georgiana, is a profound representation filled with emotional depth, capturing both the physical likeness and a glimpse into the inner world of the sitter.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
