More about this artwork

This artwork by Edward Burne-Jones, titled "The Angels Of The Hierarchy - Seraphim," depicts an angelic figure with an ethereal and solemn appearance. The painting displays remarkable detail and uses a palette of primarily muted, earthy tones, giving it a soft yet profound presence. The angel is portrayed with a cascade of long, multiple feathers across its expansive wings, which fan out on either side, suggesting both protection and grace. This intricate wing design signifies the seraphim's high rank among angels in Christian theology, known for their closeness to God.Focused on the angel's face, the expression is serene and introspective, with a somewhat melancholic gaze. This facial expression, coupled with the angel's direct stare, invites the viewer into a moment of contemplation and reverence. The angel wears a flowing, golden robe that drapes elegantly around the body, enhancing the figure's divine essence. The garment is tied at the chest with a knot, leading down to meticulously detailed folds, which add a textural richness to the visual experience.Adding to the celestial theme, the angel holds an incense burner, which is a common symbol in art for prayer and sanctification, further emphasizing the spiritual nature of the seraphim.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
