More about this artwork
The painting depicts a group of female figures intertwined in a sea of elaborate patterns and vibrant colors. They appear to be floating in a dreamlike state, entangled in a swirl of flowing garments and abstract shapes. The central figure is tenderly embracing others, suggesting themes of protection, affection, or a communal slumber. The use of color is rich, primarily consisting of blues, pinks, and yellows, with intricate details and decorations in the garments that mimic elements of nature or celestial bodies. The background contrasts sharply, offering a dark, undefined space that enhances the luminosity and vivacity of the group.

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was one of the greatest Austrian symbolist painters of the Art Nouveau era. Renowned as one of the most prominent founding members, and as a president of the Vienna Art Nouveau movement (Vienna Secession). His works were mainly paintings, murals, and sketches. Marked by his numerous erotic drawings, Klimt's primary subject were female figures, and at one point his work was even criticized as pornographic. Klimt found financial success in his "Golden Phase" with decorative techniques and the prominent use of gold leaf in his paintings.
