More about this artwork

"Seated Model on the Couch" by Edvard Munch is a striking and vivid portrait that captures the essence of a woman seated comfortably yet contemplatively on a couch. In this painting, Munch employs a vibrant palette with dominant greens, reds, and whites, which he manipulates to create a sense of depth and emotion in the composition. The woman in the painting sits with her body slightly turned towards the viewer, her gaze introspective and distant, suggesting a moment of thought or contemplation. She is dressed in a flowing, light green blouse and a long, white skirt with hints of pink, which provides a soft contrast to the more intense colors of her surroundings. The background is equally expressive, featuring an array of furniture and objects that offer a glimpse into the interior setting. To the right, there is a series of bookcases filled with books, suggesting an environment of intellect and culture. The couch on which she sits is richly colored in shades of blue and green, adorned with a cushion that has a pop of red and blue, adding to the visual interest of the scene.Munch's brushwork is loose and expressive, contributing to the overall emotional and psychological depth of the painting.

Edvard Munch (12 December 1863 – 23 January 1944) was a Norwegian painter. His best known work, The Scream (1893), has become one of Western art's most iconic images.

His childhood was overshadowed by illness, bereavement and the dread of inheriting a mental condition that ran in the family. Studying at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania (today's Oslo), Munch began to live a bohemian life under the influence of the nihilist Hans Jæger, who urged him to paint his own emotional and psychological state ('soul painting'); from this emerged his distinctive style.
