More about this artwork

This painting titled "Cupid and Psyche" by Edward Burne-Jones depicts a poignant scene from classical mythology. The painting features two central figures: Cupid, the Roman god of love, and Psyche, a mortal woman of stunning beauty. Here, Cupid is illustrated with his characteristic wings and depicted in a flowing blue robe. He gently lifts Psyche's hand, who appears to be waking from a deep sleep upon a draped white bed.The scene is set in an idyllic, garden-like surrounding, flush with blooming pink roses. The backdrop provides a tranquil, green landscape that includes a distant town, suggesting a peaceful, almost pastoral setting. An ornate architectural feature can be seen to the right, decorated with a mythological face, perhaps reflecting the inclusion of classical themes that are typical of Burne-Jones's work.Overall, this artwork captures a moment of tender interaction between the divine and the human, enveloped in a serene environment. The exquisite attention to detail and the emotional depth evident in the posture and expressions of the characters are indicative of Burne-Jones's Pre-Raphaelite style, which often celebrated beauty, rich color, and intricate compositions. The painting invites viewers to reflect on themes of love, myth, and the interplay between the ethereal and the earthly.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
