More about this artwork

"Love In A Tangle" from The Flower Book by Edward Burne-Jones is a beautifully detailed and intricate painting that carries a deeply romantic and somewhat mystical aura. This artwork is created in a circular format, providing a focused and intimate view. The painting features a single woman, draped in a flowing white gown, sitting elegantly on a low, red brick wall. She occupies the foreground and is positioned amidst a lush and patterned garden. Her pose is gentle and absorbed as she threads or weaves a long, thin plant or vine, which extends into the detailed maze of green hedges decorated with vibrant flowers that fill the background. The setting suggests a quiet, secluded garden space, evoking feelings of serenity and contemplation. The circular motif might symbolize continuity or infinity, possibly reflecting the endless nature of love and its complexities, as implied by the title "Love In A Tangle." The intricate design and the concentration of the woman as she interacts with the tangled vine could metaphorically speak to the entwining and often complicated paths of relationships and emotions.Edward Burne-Jones, known for his involvement with the later Pre-Raphaelite movement, often depicted themes of romanticism, mythology, and medievalism. This painting is characteristic of his attention to detail, use of vibrant colors, and the portrayal of an idealized, almost ethereal human form, imbued with symbolism and emotional depth.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
