More about this artwork

"Flower of God," part of "The Flower Book" by Edward Burne-Jones, is a captivating painting with a serene and ethereal feel. The artwork is circular in format and features two primary figures situated within a landscape that appears both golden and lush, reminiscent of fields of ripe wheat. In the scene, there are two figures, one of whom is an angel with expansive golden wings that radiate a warm, inviting light. The angel is shown holding out a delicate flower to the other figure, a woman draped in a simple white gown that speaks to purity and grace. The way the angel presents the flower to her suggests a moment of divine offering or blessing, and the demeanor of both figures exudes a sense of peaceful communion. The background, with its sweeping strokes evoking tall grass or wheat, adds a rich texture to the scene, and the soft, muted earth tones give the painting a timeless and contemplative quality. This piece emits a profound sense of spirituality and the interconnectedness of the celestial and the terrestrial, perhaps alluding to themes such as the divine in nature, or the beauty and sanctity found in the simple things of life.Overall, Burne-Jones' work here is a beautiful representation of the mystical and intimate encounters that he often depicted, reflecting his deep fascination with medieval themes, spiritual allegories, and the natural world.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
