More about this artwork

This painting by Edward Burne-Jones, titled "Angel Playing A Horn," portrays a serene angel elegantly playing a long horn. The artwork is delicately composed, reflecting Burne-Jones's skills and his penchant for medieval and spiritual themes, characteristic of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. The angel is depicted in a gentle, downward gaze, focusing intently on the instrument, conveying a sense of peacefulness and reverence. The flowing robes and the graceful folds of the garment add a dynamic quality to the figure, emphasizing movement and softness. The restrained color palette, mainly consisting of sepia tones, highlights the sculptural qualities of the figure and adds to the overall solemn and contemplative mood of the piece.Burne-Jones’s use of line and form in the angel's wings gives them a textured, feather-like appearance, enhancing the ethereal quality of the image. The circular halo around the angel's head not only signifies its divine nature but also frames the angel’s face, drawing attention to the serene and focused expression. This piece beautifully captures the blend of spirituality and artistic refinement that is often seen in Burne-Jones's works.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
