More about this artwork

This painting, titled "Gathering Fruit" by Mary Cassatt, depicts a serene and intimate moment between two figures, likely mother and child, set in a lush, verdant garden. The scene is beautifully rendered with soft, harmonious colors that convey a peaceful, everyday activity enhanced with a gentle sense of affection and care. The composition shows an adult figure in a light blue dress standing on a short ladder, reaching up to pluck fruit from a vine-strewn wall. Her posture and gentle grasp on the fruit suggest a delicacy and attentiveness to her task. The flowing blue dress patterned with light florals contrasts subtly with the green foliage, highlighting her as the central figure in the scene.Below her, a child stands looking up, the mother's actions seemingly a point of interest or learning for the child. Clad in a soft pink dress, the child adds a complementary color to the scene, enhancing the overall warmth and domestic feel of the image. The use of flat areas of color and minimal but precise line work is reminiscent of Japanese prints, which influenced many artists of Cassatt's era, including herself. This technique adds a decorative quality to the painting while still focusing on the tender human interaction.Overall, "Gathering Fruit" captures a moment of simple beauty and maternal care, emblematic of Cassatt's focus on the private and contemplative experiences of women and children in their daily lives.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.

She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
