More about this artwork

This painting by Mary Cassatt, titled "Mother Feeding Child," depicts a tender and intimate moment between a mother and her young child. The mother, dressed in a soft, light-colored blouse with her hair neatly pulled back, gazes down affectionately at her child as she holds a glass to his lips, aiding him as he drinks. The child, comfortably seated and slightly leaning into his mother, appears focused and calm, his cheeks flushed with a gentle rosiness, indicative of the warm and caring environment. The background is softly blurred, focusing the viewer’s attention on the figures and their interaction. The use of pastel tones creates a warm and serene atmosphere. On the table, there is a pot and a plate, suggesting a mealtime setting, which adds to the domestic feel of the scene. Cassatt's brushwork is delicate and detailed, capturing the textures of the clothing and the softness of the skin, which enhances the overall tender feeling of the painting.Cassatt, known for her portrayal of the social and private lives of women, emphasizes the bond between mother and child, a recurring and central theme in her work. This painting not only captures a daily routine but also elevates it to a moment of quiet beauty and emotional depth, reflecting Cassatt's ability to convey the profound connections and everyday moments of human experience.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.

She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
