More about this artwork

This beautiful painting by Mary Cassatt, titled "Nurse Reading to a Little Girl," captures a tender and intimate moment between a young nurse and a small girl, presumably her charge. The scene is set outdoors, as evident by the hints of lush greenery and the soft, diffused background that suggests a serene garden or park environment. The nurse is shown with a gentle, focused expression as she reads from a book that both she and the girl are looking at. Her attire, a dark dress complemented by what seems to be a light blue shawl or overcoat, enhances the sense of calm and protection she provides to the child. The nurse's hair is neatly tied back, which adds to the demure aesthetic typical of a caregiver in the era Cassatt was painting. The little girl, with her striking red hair and a white dress with pink and lavender tones, stands out against the more muted colors of the nurse's attire and the background. Her expression is one of curiosity and attentiveness, illustrating the age-old enchantment of children with stories. The way she holds the book, with her small hands carefully around it, underscores her engagement and perhaps even her burgeoning love for reading. In the depiction of this scene, Cassatt's use of soft pastel colors and her brushwork lend a texture to the image that is both visual and emotional.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.

She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
