More about this artwork

"The Boating Party" by Mary Cassatt is a vibrant and evocative painting that showcases Cassatt's skill in depicting intimate, personal moments with rich, expressive strokes. In this work, three figures are depicted enjoying a moment on the water. A man, wearing a dark blue sailor's jacket and cap, is seated at the back of the boat, handling the oars and looking back at his companions. Facing him in the foreground of the composition are a woman and a young child. The woman, dressed in a light blue striped dress with a matching hat adorned with a yellow ribbon, holds the child gently on her lap. The child, dressed in a soft pink garment, appears relaxed and content in the motherly embrace. The setting is a body of water that reflects various shades of blue and green, indicative of a serene, outdoor environment. The yellow and green boat contrasts vividly with the deep blue of the water, adding a dynamic and colorful element to the scene. In the background, a distant shoreline with foliage and buildings suggests a peaceful riverside setting.Cassatt's work is celebrated for its ability to capture the essence of her subjects, and "The Boating Party" is no exception. Her use of light, color, and composition emphasizes the tender and calm interaction between the figures, encapsulating a moment of leisurely joy and familial love.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.

She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
