More about this artwork

"The Bath" by Mary Cassatt depicts an intimate and tender scene between a mother and her child. This painting showcases Cassatt's interest in the everyday moments of family life, particularly those involving women and children. In this softly colored artwork, we see a mother dressed in a yellow robe patterned with dark spots, attentively helping her small child with a bath. The mother, positioned to the left, has her hand submerged in a bluish basin of water, suggesting she is testing the temperature or stirring the water. Her posture is gentle and protective, as she leans over slightly towards the child. The child, standing and facing away from the viewer, appears to be cautiously approaching the basin, possibly preparing for the bath. The pose and expression of the child convey a natural hesitancy, typical of infants facing water. The overall composition, with the mother's enveloping robe and leaning gesture, creates a protective and nurturing atmosphere.Cassatt's use of light pastel colors and a minimalistic background focuses the viewer’s attention on the figures and their interaction. Her style here, influenced by Japanese prints, is evident in the clean lines, flat areas of color, and the simple yet effective depiction of figures and fabric. This painting not only captures a moment of caregiving but also highlights the beauty and tranquility found in these daily routines.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.

She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
