The artwork portrays a woman and a young child, presumably her daughter, in a close, nurturing pose. The mother's gaze is directed towards the child with a look of loving attentiveness and affection, suggesting a deep bond and a sense of protectiveness. The use of color in this painting is soft and predominantly pastel, contributing to the gentle and warm atmosphere. Cassatt's brushwork, evident in the textured application of paint, adds softness and a tactile quality to the figures, enhancing the emotional depth of the scene. The child's expression is contemplative and serene, possibly reflecting the comfort and security felt in the mother's embrace. The surroundings are abstracted, with the focus kept squarely on the interplay of emotions and the physical connection between the two figures. This choice of composition emphasizes the universality and timelessness of the mother-child relationship.Mary Cassatt is renowned for her depictions of women and children in everyday settings, and this painting is a quintessential example of her ability to convey profound emotions through simple, domestic scenes. It speaks to the viewer about the universal themes of maternal love and childhood.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.

She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
