More about this artwork

"Woman Bathing" by Mary Cassatt is a beautiful and intimate painting that captures the private moment of a woman attending to her personal hygiene. In the composition, you see a woman bent over a basin, presumably washing her face or neck. Only her back and reflections in the mirror are visible, which adds to the painting's sense of privacy and introspection. The environment is characterized by soft, muted colors that create a calm and peaceful atmosphere. She is wearing a loosely draped, colorful striped towel that adds a lovely contrast to the pale shades of the room and her skin. The attention to the details of the textiles and the reflection in the simple yet elegant wooden mirror frame adds depth to the scene. The flooring, adorned with a detailed floral motif, complements the aesthetic and suggests a domestic, possibly upper-class setting during the late 19th to early 20th century. Additionally, a clear glass pitcher beside her on the floor further emphasizes the everyday nature of the scene.Overall, Cassatt's work here is a striking portrayal of feminine grace and the beauty found in daily rituals, rendered with the sensitivity and delicacy that she is known for in her exploration of the lives of women in her era.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.

She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
