More about this artwork

"Christ at Emmaus" by Albrecht Dürer is a striking woodcut that embodies the poignant moment of revelation from the New Testament story in which Jesus, after his resurrection, is recognized by two of his disciples in the village of Emmaus. This scene is often chosen to represent the theme of recognition and revelation. In the artwork, Jesus is depicted at the center, appearing with a radiant halo of light spreading out behind him, which dramatically highlights his figure and underscores his divine nature. His expression is serene and commanding, bringing focus to his pivotal role in the scene. Around him are seated the two disciples, captured in the moment of realization as they recognize Jesus. Their postures and expressions convey surprise and awe.The table setting includes bread and wine, symbolizing the breaking of bread through which Jesus revealed his identity to the disciples. The intricate detailing of the tablecloth, dishware, and food adds to the realism of the setting, contrasting with the miraculous event unfolding. The use of light and shadow, along with the detailed expressions and physical gestures of the figures, enhances the emotional and spiritual intensity of the scene. Dürer’s mastery in woodcut technique is evident in the precise lines and clear imagery, making it a compelling depiction of this biblical story.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
