More about this artwork

This intricate engraving by Albrecht Dürer, titled "Apollo and Diana," showcases the artist's skill in rendering fine details and human figures with mythology-inspired themes. The image depicts Apollo, the god of the sun, music, and prophecy, standing with his back slightly turned towards the viewer. His posture is powerful, showing well-defined muscles, and he is drawing a bow, ready to release an arrow.Beside Apollo sits Diana, the goddess of the hunt, the moon, and chastity. She appears serene and composed, her gaze directed forward. Diana is depicted with a sense of modesty and grace, characteristic of her virginal and hunting attributes. Her bow rests beside her, indicating her own role as a huntress. Both figures are portrayed in a classical style, with attention to the anatomy and poise that is reminiscent of Renaissance art's revival of ancient Greco-Roman aesthetics. The composition includes detailed elements in the background, such as a stag’s skull beneath Diana, symbolizing the hunt and natural death.Dürer’s monogram is visible in the artwork, confirming his authorship and adding a signature mark to this fine example of Northern Renaissance art. Such engravings played a crucial role in disseminating Dürer's work and artistic style across Europe, influencing many generations of artists.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
