More about this artwork

"Study of the Resurrection for 'Fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary' (1903-1916)" by John Singer Sargent is a compelling and vigorous sketch that captures the raw energy of spiritual rebirth associated with the Resurrection theme. The image predominately features the powerful torso of a male figure, drawn with dynamic lines that highlight the muscular details and contours of the body. This intensity and focus on physical form convey the strength and miracle of the Resurrection.Sargent’s mastery in using soft, yet confident strokes adds a texture that almost seems to bring the figure to life, illustrating his profound ability to combine realism with emotive expression. The placement and pose of the figure, with the arms either out of view or in motion, gives a sense of emergence or rising, aligning perfectly with the theme of resurrection.Accompanied by annotations possibly indicating corrections or notes for further development, this sketch not only serves as a preparatory work but also provides a glimpse into Sargent’s intricate creative process. The involvement of slates or dates on the painting includes annotations like "Cummire Tedeschi" and "73 Chelmsford Stret," which might reference specifics relevant to the creation or staging of the work.

Born in Florence to American expatriate parents, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) is considered Europe's leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era. He was educated at both Accademia delle Belle Arti and Paris's École des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, under the guidance of Émile–Auguste Carolus–Duran, a portraitist and muralist, Sargent learned to paint directly from observation without first sketching, employing a fluidity, influenced by the Impressionists. Sargent created more than 2,900 paintings, mainly portraits and landscapes from his travels across the Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East and America.
