More about this artwork

This striking engraving by Albrecht Dürer, titled "Mary Magdalene Is Taken To Heaven," vividly depicts the ascent of Mary Magdalene into heaven. In the center of the image, Mary Magdalene is portrayed as a glowing, ethereal figure, adorned with a halo. She is borne upwards by a group of cherubic angels who gently support her as she drifts skyward, reflecting the transcendent moment of her spiritual ascension.Mary Magdalene's nudity might symbolize her purity and renewed innocence at the moment of her ascension. Her long flowing hair adds to her grace and the sense of movement in the ascent. The surrounding landscape includes detailed depiction of rocks, trees, and distant hills, typical of Dürer's attention to detail and his skill in portraying nature. In the lower left part of the image, a small kneeling figure, presumably part of the earthly realm, looks up towards Mary Magdalene, emphasizing her movement from the earthly to the heavenly. This scene not only captures a powerful religious narrative but also showcases Dürer's mastery in printmaking, evident in the intricate details of the figures and the landscape. The inclusion of Dürer's famed monogram at the bottom of the engraving confirms his authorship of this poignant religious depiction.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
