More about this artwork

This etching by Albrecht Dürer, titled "Saint Sebastian Tied to a Tree," is a striking depiction of Saint Sebastian, a Christian martyr. In the artwork, Sebastian is shown bound to a tree, his body slightly contorted in an elegant pose that underlines both his suffering and the calmness of his expression. He is depicted with multiple arrows piercing his body, a traditional portrayal reflecting the manner of his martyrdom, where he was executed by being shot with arrows.Dürer’s skill in engraving is evident in the fine details of the figure’s muscular anatomy and the realistic texture of the tree bark. The detail in Saint Sebastian’s curly hair and strained facial expression adds to the intensity of the scene. Unlike many depictions of the saint, which tend to be more serene, Dürer’s version conveys a dramatic sense of pain and endurance. The monogram of Dürer, consisting of a large 'D' and a smaller 'A' contained within it, is visible on the lower right side of the image, serving as his signature. This work is a quintessential example of Dürer’s mastery of the engraving medium and his ability to convey profound religious narratives with emotional depth and technical precision.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
