More about this artwork

This detailed etching by Albrecht Dürer, titled "The Lost Son," beautifully captures a scene from the Biblical parable of the Prodigal Son. In this illustration, we see the moment when the son, having squandered his inheritance, is destitute and forced to feed pigs for a living—a task considered to be one of the lowest and most humiliating jobs, particularly for a Jewish man, given the religious impurity of swine. The composition is dense and richly textured, featuring a rural village setting. The prominent figure of the son is in the foreground, markedly distressed and in tattered clothing, symbolizing his deep fall from grace and fortune. He is surrounded by pigs, further emphasizing his dire circumstances. The village in the background, with its meticulously drawn buildings and a distant church, perhaps symbolizes the structured society and life of moral rectitude that he left behind.Dürer’s work is meticulous, with keen attention to the details of the architecture and the naturalistic rendering of the animals and human figure, which helps convey the emotional and moral gravity of the scene. The artwork not only tells a story from the scriptures but also reflects Dürer’s skill in using imagery to explore themes of redemption, humility, and the human condition.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
