More about this artwork

This artwork, titled "The Golden Cornice, No. II" by Joseph Pennell, is a finely detailed etching that presents a bird’s-eye view of a bustling cityscape, presumably captured from a high vantage point. The composition focuses on a cluster of early 20th-century high-rise buildings, illustrating the architectural grandeur and density of an urban landscape, which may very well be New York City, given the artist's history with depicting the city. The image shows intricately designed buildings with prominent cornices, hence the title, "The Golden Cornice." These architectural details, along with the ornate facades of the buildings, are highlighted, contrasting with the more distant and hazier portrayal of the city's outskirts and waterfront, where boats are faintly visible. The clouds and the smoke contribute to the dynamic atmosphere, suggesting the industrial vibrancy of the city.Pennell’s etching technique is evident in the rich textures and varied tones from deep blacks to lighter grays, which create a sense of depth and three-dimensionality. The perspective is dramatic, making the viewer feel as if they are soaring above the city, adding to the grandiosity and expansive nature of the urban environment.Overall, Pennell's work captures not just the architectural but also the ambient essence of early 20th-century American cities, reflecting a combination of awe for the modern city’s towering structures and a critique of its chaotic, cramped conditions.
