More about this artwork

This painting by Camille Pissarro, titled "Boulevard des Italiens, Morning, Sunlight," captures a bustling Parisian street scene. Pissarro employs his characteristic loose brushwork and attention to the effects of light to portray the lively atmosphere of the boulevard, bathed in morning sunlight. The composition is bustling with activity, featuring an array of horse-drawn carriages and omnibuses bustling down the street alongside pedestrians of various classes going about their morning routines. The trees lining the boulevard are depicted with textured brush strokes that convey the foliage and the play of light filtering through. The buildings in the background represent typical Parisian architecture of the period with their uniform façades and rows of windows, adding a sense of depth and urban context to the scene.Pissarro's treatment of light and color vividly captures the essence of Paris in the late 19th century and the Impressionist interest in daily urban life and the transient effects of light. This painting not only offers a glimpse into the historical setting but also showcases Pissarro’s skill in rendering the dynamic interplay of light and movement within an urban landscape.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
