More about this artwork

"The Gardener – Old Peasant with Cabbage" is a captivating work by Camille Pissarro, crafted between 1883 and 1895. This painting portrays a tender scene of a gardener, an older man meticulously engaged in the act of harvesting a cabbage. Set against a backdrop of lush greenery, the foreground is dominated by the peasant, who is clad in a simple sweater and vest, with a cap on his head, suggesting his humble life and his connection to the earth.Pissarro's brushwork brings out the rustic textures of the gardener's clothing and the dense leaves of the cabbage, blending harmoniously with the soft, verdant cabbage patch in the background. The artist's use of light and shadow, along with his distinctive strokes, enhances the naturalistic detail, making the scene come alive. This piece is an exquisite example of Pissarro's focus on rural life and his mastery in depicting the simplicity and beauty of everyday tasks. Through his craft, he not only immortalizes the dignity of rural labor but also reflects his deep empathetic engagement with the peasant class during that era.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
