More about this artwork

This painting, titled "Self-Portrait," is a compelling work by Camille Pissarro, a key figure in the Impressionist movement. The portrait is an intimate glimpse into the artist's appearance and perhaps his psyche at the time of painting. Pissarro's use of brushwork and color reveals not only his skills as a painter but also subtly communicates aspects of his character and mood.In the painting, Pissarro presents himself in a three-quarter view, gazing directly out towards the viewer with a penetrating and contemplative expression. His eyes, dark and reflective, seem to hold a narrative of their own, suggesting a moment of self-reflection or introspection. The lighting in the painting highlights the left side of his face, accentuating his thoughtful expression and the details of his facial features—his strong jawline, the fullness of his beard, and his neatly combed hair. The brushstrokes are loose but deliberate, typical of the Impressionistic style, which adds a sense of immediacy and authenticity to the work. The color palette is relatively subdued with earthy tones dominating, reflecting perhaps the practical and unpretentious nature of the artist. This self-portrait not only allows us to see Pissarro as he saw himself but also serves as an important document of his artistic journey, capturing the personal and stylistic developments at that particular point in his life.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
