More about this artwork
This painting, titled "The Gleaners" by Camille Pissarro, depicts a pastoral scene of agricultural labor in the late 19th century. Pissarro, a key figure in the Impressionist movement, is known for his focus on rural landscapes and peasant life, themes vividly illustrated in this work. The scene captures several people in the act of gleaning—collecting leftovers from farmers' harvested fields. Traditionally, gleaning was a way for the poor to gather food. In the foreground, there is a prominent group: a woman dressed in blue stands upright, resting her hand on her hip, possibly overseeing the work or taking a brief respite. She is surrounded by others who are bent over or kneeling, actively gathering the scattered straws and grains. The figures are placed in a vast field that stretches into a rolling landscape under a broad, soft sky, implying the expansive nature of agricultural work.Pissarro’s use of light and color here is typical of the Impressionist style, aiming to capture the momentary and transient effects of sunlight on the scene.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro
Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
