More about this artwork

This painting by Camille Pissarro, titled "Landscape At Saint-Charles, Near Gisors, Sunset," is a beautiful portrayal of a serene evening in the countryside. The artwork is immersed in a tranquil atmosphere, indicated by the gentle play of light and shadow typical of sunset hours.Examining the canvas, you notice Pissarro's masterful use of color and texture specific to the Impressionist style, which captures the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere. The scene is dominated by a cluster of trees at the center, their dense foliage richly dappled with hues of green, blue, and yellow, suggesting the light filtering through their branches. The leaves appear to flutter slightly, perhaps moved by a soft evening breeze. On the right side, a tall, slender tree partially frames the scene, emphasizing the verticality and providing balance to the composition. Below and beyond the trees, a gentle slope leads the eye into the distance where hints of a blue and golden sky peek through less densely wooded areas. This gradation of depth, achieved through layers of brushed color, gives the landscape a lush and expansive feel. The foreground features hints of a pathway that curves out of sight, inviting the viewer to imagine wandering through this peaceful setting.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
