More about this artwork

This intriguing painting by Toyohara Kunichika, entitled “Hada Kurabe Hana No Shōbuyu Kurabe, Koshi Yuki No Ya,” depicts a lively and engaging scene from Japanese culture during the Edo period. The artwork shows a group of women and children engaging in what appears to be a communal bathing or washing activity inside a traditional Japanese house. The scene is rich in detail and narrative. To the left, a woman assists a child in washing, while nearby other women are occupied with their own or children’s washing tasks. In the center and forefront, some women are depicted scrubbing clothes or perhaps towels against wooden washboards, showing the communal aspect of labor and daily life. One child, held by a woman, appears animated, possibly playing or reacting to the cold water, which adds a touch of dynamism and realism to the scene. Other women are engaged in conversation or focused intently on their tasks, all within a backdrop that includes traditional wooden architecture and minimally adorned walls, typical of Japanese interiors of the time.Overall, the painting captures a communal moment, possibly highlighting aspects of daily routine, social interaction, and the traditional role of women in maintaining household duties, all conveyed with Kunichika’s characteristic attention to detail and vivid portrayal of human expressions and emotions. The artwork not only illustrates a moment in time but also reflects cultural values and the everyday life of its era.

Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900) was one of the most successful Japanese woodblock print artists during the Edo period. His passion for Kabuki shows drove him to mainly focus on producing prints of actors and actresses from Kabuki scenes, by using the Ukiyo-e style.
