More about this artwork

This striking image from the painting titled "Kezori Kyūemon" by Toyohara Kunichika portrays a Kabuki actor in the role of Kezori Kyūemon. The figure in the painting exudes a dramatic and intense character, as is typical in Kabuki performances, emphasizing bold expressions and movements. The actor is shown with a fierce expression, arched eyebrows, sharply drawn eyes, and a tense mouth, a portrayal that brings out the depth of the character's emotions. His face and the Kimono he wears are highly detailed: his Kimono is ornately decorated with vibrant colors and elaborate patterns featuring dragons and swirling clouds, symbols that often denote power and mystery in traditional Japanese art.The choice of colors is vivid, using a palette that enhances the drama and emotional intensity of the character. Such detailed and expressive artwork is characteristic of Toyohara Kunichika, who was known for his woodblock prints and depictions of subjects from the Kabuki theater.Additionally, there are several pieces of Japanese text within the painting, likely giving context about the play, the character, and perhaps the actor's interpretation of the role, typical in Kabuki theater prints to inform or engage the audience. The red seal stamps also present may indicate authenticity and ownership, common in traditional Japanese prints.

Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900) was one of the most successful Japanese woodblock print artists during the Edo period. His passion for Kabuki shows drove him to mainly focus on producing prints of actors and actresses from Kabuki scenes, by using the Ukiyo-e style.
