More about this artwork

This image, titled "Wilson Bentley's Snowflake 1152" by Wilson Bentley, depicts a meticulously detailed snowflake against a stark black background, which highlights its intricate structure. Wilson Bentley, often known as "Snowflake" Bentley, was renowned for his pioneering work in photographing snowflakes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Each snowflake he captured showcases the unique geometric patterns that naturally occur due to atmospheric conditions during the snowflake's formation. In this particular image, the snowflake displays a six-fold radial symmetry, common in snowflakes but always varied in design. The design features elongated, feather-like arms extending from a hexagonal center, and each arm is embellished with smaller, detailed branches that further enhance the snowflake's delicate complexity. The level of detail achieved in Bentley's work not only provides aesthetic beauty but also contributes significantly to the scientific understanding of snow crystal formation and variability. The use of black and white in this photograph serves to emphasize the texture and delicate patterns of the snow crystal, inviting the viewer to contemplate the natural artistry and wonder of the frozen water molecule. Bentley's work is a bridge between art and science, showcasing the stunning natural beauty of snowflakes, each a unique piece of natural art.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
