More about this artwork

This painting by Charles Demuth, titled "Count Muffat Discovers Nana With The Marquis De Chouard," is a watercolor work that depicts an evocative scene inspired by Émile Zola's novel "Nana." The painting is vibrantly detailed, employing soft watercolor hues and sketchy lines that create a dynamic and slightly chaotic atmosphere, typical of Demuth’s style. On the right, we see Nana, the main character of the novel, represented lounging seductively on what appears to be a sofa or a chaise. Her pose and scant clothing suggest a state of undress and relaxation, and she seems oblivious to or unconcerned by the other figures in the room. Her prominent placement and the light colors around her draw the viewer's eye directly to her.To the left, the figure of Count Muffat is seen peering through what could be a door or a window, his posture stiff and his face filled with surprise or shock. This suggests he is witnessing something unexpected or disapproving, capturing the moment of discovery referenced in the title. Nearby, another male figure, presumably the Marquis De Chouard, sits facing towards Nana, partially turned away from Count Muffat, adding to the narrative tension implied in the scene.Through the composition, Demuth captures the essence of scandal and social dynamics that are central to Zola’s novel.

Charles Demuth (1883-1935) was one of the leading artists during the American Modernism era. He was distinguished for intimate watercolors and cubic architectural paintings. Demuth studied art at Académie Julian in Paris, where he was welcomed into the avant-garde art scene and met other American Cubism artists like Marsden Hartley. His watercolor figures have a weightless and surrealistic character with a sensitive linear style, in which he illustrated plays and novels such as Émile Zola's Nana. He also depicted an evolving gay scene of encounters at bath houses through watercolors for his close friends, like the "Turkish Bath", works that now are of great historical significance. Demuth later employed a cubist technique by painting industrial factories with complex structural planes, leading him to becoming a pioneer for the precisionist movement.
