More about this artwork

Charles Demuth's "The Girl With The Golden Eyes" from 1916 is a fascinating watercolor painting that captures a dreamlike, fluid scene imbued with motion and emotion. Demuth, known for his precision and delicate handling of watercolor, showcases his skill in blending vivid colors and subtle details to create a piece that feels both ephemeral and intense. The painting features two central figures: a man and a woman. The man is depicted in dark, almost silhouette-like tones, with his muscular body in dynamic motion, possibly dancing or moving energetically. His figure is bold and solid, contrasting sharply against the more ethereal and tender depiction of the woman. The woman, presumably "The Girl With The Golden Eyes," appears reclined and possibly in a state of repose or passion. Her expression is relaxed yet expressive, and her eyes, as the title suggests, could be interpreted as strikingly golden, even though the hues used are more subtly orange and earth-toned. The flowing reddish-orange lines may symbolically represent her gaze or perhaps an aura of mystical energy surrounding her.The composition is surrounded by softer washes of color that suggest a background noise of clouds or an undefined natural environment, adding to the painting's dreamlike quality.

Charles Demuth (1883-1935) was one of the leading artists during the American Modernism era. He was distinguished for intimate watercolors and cubic architectural paintings. Demuth studied art at Académie Julian in Paris, where he was welcomed into the avant-garde art scene and met other American Cubism artists like Marsden Hartley. His watercolor figures have a weightless and surrealistic character with a sensitive linear style, in which he illustrated plays and novels such as Émile Zola's Nana. He also depicted an evolving gay scene of encounters at bath houses through watercolors for his close friends, like the "Turkish Bath", works that now are of great historical significance. Demuth later employed a cubist technique by painting industrial factories with complex structural planes, leading him to becoming a pioneer for the precisionist movement.
