More about this artwork

In "Scène Parisienne en hiver," Théophile Alexandre Steinlen captures a moment of everyday life in a cold, wintry Paris. Set against the backdrop of muted city architecture, the painting depicts a busy street scene bathed in the pale light of a winter day.At the center of this composition, a horse-drawn cart laden with snow prominently features, highlighting the ongoing cleanup after a recent snowfall. A man atop the cart works diligently to shovel the snow, suggesting the communal effort required to keep the city functional during winter months. The outlines and textures in the painting convey the chill in the air and the crunch underfoot. In the foreground, various figures are shown going about their daily business, bundled against the cold. Two individuals, perhaps workers, are engaged in conversation beside the cart, their postures relaxed yet weathered. Nearby, another figure leads a pair of horses, further emphasizing the reliance on animal labor in this era. A small, alert dog adds a touch of liveliness to the scene, contributing to the painting's portrayal of urban life.Steinlen's use of soft blues and earth tones gives the painting a sense of tranquility and resilience. His skillful blending of light and shadow creates depth, making "Scène Parisienne en hiver" not only a historical snapshot but also a poignant reminder of the rhythms of city life, regardless of the season.

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker.

Born in Lausanne, Steinlen studied at the University of Lausanne before taking a job as a designer trainee at a textile mill in Mulhouse in eastern France. In his early twenties he was still developing his skills as a painter when he and his wife Emilie were encouraged by the painter François Bocion to move to the artistic community in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris. Once there, Steinlen was befriended by the painter Adolphe Willette who introduced him to the artistic crowd at Le Chat Noir that led to his commissions to do poster art for the cabaret owner/entertainer, Aristide Bruant and other commercial enterprises.
