More about this artwork

Amedeo Modigliani's "Seated Nude" from 1917 exemplifies the artist's distinctive approach to portraiture, characterized by a fusion of modernity and timeless grace. The painting portrays a female nude seated against a rich, dark background that contrasts sharply with the soft, luminous tones of her skin. Modigliani's unique style is evident in the elongated proportions and the simplified, almost abstract forms of the figure. The subject gazes directly at the viewer, her eyes rendered with Modigliani's characteristic almond shape, imbued with an enigmatic expression that suggests introspection and a serene self-awareness. The positioning of her body, with one arm resting along her thigh and the other supporting her as she leans slightly forward, creates a sense of relaxed poise that is both inviting and contemplative. The use of color in "Seated Nude" is particularly striking. The warm hues of the subject's body stand out against the dark, ambient background, while the subtle modulation of skin tones suggests the natural contouring of her form. The texture of the brushwork adds a tactile quality to the painting, enhancing the sensual pleasure of the visual experience. This work not only reflects Modigliani's masterful ability to convey the human form but also portrays the psychological depth and personal dignity of the subject.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard MunchPaul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
