More about this artwork

The painting "Morning Glories from Momoyogusa" by Kamisaka Sekka is a striking example of Japanese Rimpa school art, emphasizing simplified forms and vibrant colors. This artwork beautifully illustrates several morning glory flowers in a palette dominated by shades of blue and green, positioned against a background of grey vertical stripes that evoke the feeling of tall, slender bamboo trunks or perhaps rain streaking down a window. The composition balances a delicate interplay between the organic curves of the plant and the rigid linearity of the background. The morning glories are depicted with bright blue petals that stand out vividly against the muted tones, infusing a sense of freshness and vitality. The leaves, rendered in varying shades of green, curl and stretch around the flowers, anchoring them in a naturalistic setting that contrasts with the abstracted backdrop.Sekka's use of color and form in this painting not only reflects the aesthetic principles of the Rimpa school but also captures a mood that can be described as both tranquil and joyous, highlighting the beauty of nature in a serene, almost poetic manner. The clarity and meticulous detail with which the morning glories are rendered make this artwork a visually appealing representation of both traditional and modern artistic elements.

Kamisaka Sekka was an important artistic figure in early twentieth-century Japan. Born in Kyoto to a Samurai family, his talents for art and design were recognized early. He eventually allied himself with the traditional Rinpa school of art. He is considered the last great proponent of this artistic tradition.
