More about this artwork

"Susan in a Straw Bonnet" by Mary Cassatt is a captivating pastel work that showcases Cassatt’s masterful use of color and ability to portray intimate moments. The subject of the painting is a young girl named Susan, who appears to be lost in thought. The focus is primarily on her facial expression, which is somewhat contemplative and serene.Susan is depicted wearing a straw bonnet which is adorned with a deep blue fabric, blending a casual texture with rich colors. The bonnet covers her light-colored hair that just peeks out from under the hat, matching her subtle, gentle facial features. She is also dressed in a cloak or coat, suggesting a slightly chilly environment, or perhaps just an elegant attire choice typical of Cassatt's subjects from the late 19th century. The background behind Susan is abstract and softly blended, featuring strokes of green, blue, and hints of yellow and brown. This vague and impressionistic style serves to focus our attention more intently on the figure herself. The abstraction of the background contrasts effectively with the detailed rendering of Susan’s bonnet and face, highlighting her as the clear subject of interest.Mary Cassatt, with this painting, continues her exploration of the private and reflective moments in the lives of women and children. Her work often conveys a quiet mood and a deep sense of personality, which can be strongly felt in this portrayal of Susan.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.

She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
