More about this artwork

This image is not actually a painting, but rather a photograph taken by Wilson Bentley, who was famously known as "Snowflake" Bentley. Bentley was the first known person to photograph a single snow crystal in 1885. He developed a technique using microscopy and photography to capture the delicate and intricate structures of snowflakes in great detail. The image displays a snowflake with a symmetric, hexagonal structure, which is characteristic of snow crystals. Each branch of the snowflake has its own complex pattern of fern-like arms, featuring smaller branches that protrude from the main arm. The central part of the snowflake has its own unique geometric design, contributing to the overall beauty and uniqueness of each snow crystal.Wilson Bentley's work was significant because it combined art and science, showcasing the natural beauty of snowflakes while also helping to advance the understanding of meteorological phenomena. His photographs are highly valued both aesthetically and scientifically, as they precisely document the diverse forms of snow crystals.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
