More about this artwork

This image titled "Snowflake," attributed to Wilson Bentley, showcases a strikingly intricate snowflake design against a stark black background. Wilson Bentley, known as "Snowflake" Bentley, was renowned for his pioneering work in photographing snowflakes and revealing their unique, symmetrical structures. Each snowflake he captured was shown to be exquisitely detailed and distinct. In this image, the snowflake features a six-fold symmetry typical of snow crystals. The detailed branches and delicate patterns within each arm display Bentley's skill at capturing the fragile and transient beauty of snowflakes. His work not only illustrated the aesthetics of snowflakes but also supported the notion that no two snowflakes are the same, contributing significantly to the fields of meteorology and photography. The contrast between the white, crystalline, detailed structure of the snowflake and the dark background emphasizes the unique design of each crystal, making the snowflake's elaborate patterns stand out vividly. This image, like much of Bentley's work, would have required meticulous effort to photograph, especially during the early 20th century when his most active years of study took place.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
