More about this artwork

Unveiled to the public during the mid-17th century, "Winter Scene" by Jan van de Cappelle is a mesmerizing depiction of winter’s frosty embrace over a quaint village landscape. Known for his keen eye for detail and a masterful handling of light and atmosphere, van de Cappelle transports viewers to a serene, frozen moment in time. The painting is set in a small community where the central activity revolves around a frozen canal, serving as nature's playground for villagers donned in period attire. We see figures skating, conversing, and going about their daily winter chores. The delicate touch of snow on the thatched roofs of the cottages enhances the picturesque charm of the scene, while bare trees, with their intricate branches dusted in snow, frame the village delicately. On the left, a boat, seemingly locked in the ice, hints at the halted marine activities due to the harsh winter weather. Meanwhile, the impressive rendering of the sky, crowded with dynamic and moody cumulus clouds, suggests the unpredictable nature of the season, possibly foretelling a change in the weather.Jan van de Cappelle’s "Winter Scene" not only captures the beauty and challenges of winter in the 17th century but also showcases his expertise in using a subdued palette to evoke a quiet, frosty atmosphere. This painting invites the viewer to step into a past world, offering a slice of life that resonates with the tranquility and resilience of human life in harmony with the seasonal cycle.

Jan van de Cappelle was a Dutch Golden Age painter of seascapes and winter landscapes, also notable as an industrialist and art collector. He is "now considered the outstanding marine painter of 17th century Holland". He lived all his life in Amsterdam, and as well as working as an artist spent much, or most, of his time helping to manage his father Franchoy's large dyeworks, which specialized in the expensive dye carmine, and which he eventually inherited in 1674.
