More about this artwork

Roelant Savery, a renowned 17th-century Dutch artist, captivates nature and storytelling through his meticulous brushwork in the evocative painting titled "Landscape with Hunters." This landscape, imbued with the harmonious interplay of natural elements and human activity, draws viewers into a serene, timeless world. In this richly detailed artwork, the foreground features robust, twisting trees that frame the scene, their leaves painted with precision to convey both shadow and light. An atmosphere of dense foliage introduces a sense of seclusion and mystery, beckoning the eye along a path that meanders through the woods. Positioned discreetly within these woods, hunters in bright attire contribute vibrant splashes of color against the predominantly green and brown tones of the natural surroundings, adding life and human interest to the naturalistic setting. The heart of the painting unfolds gently into a delicate background where a misty, luminous sky opens up over a calm body of water. Reflecting the subtle hues of the sky, this tranquil expanse leads to a distant landscape dotted with hints of civilization—diminutive figures and structures that whisper stories of daily life far from the immediate tranquility."Landscape with Hunters" is not only a masterful representation of nature's beauty but also a thoughtful composition that invites contemplation on the relationship between humans and their natural environment. Through Savery’s art, we are transported to an idyllic, almost romantic version of the past where nature dominates and human figures play but a small, though poignant, role in the extensive canvas of the world.Visit us to experience this masterpiece and delve into the serene yet dynamic world that Savery has so skillfully frozen in time.

Roelant Savery (or Roeland(t) Maertensz Saverij, or de Savery, or many variants) was a Flanders-born Dutch Golden Age painter.

Savery was born in Kortrijk. Like so many other artists, he belonged to an Anabaptist family that fled north from the Spanish-occupied Southern Netherlands when Roelant was about 4 years old and settled in Haarlem around 1585. He was taught painting by his older brother Jacob Savery (c. 1565 – 1603) and Hans Bol.
