More about this artwork

Unveiling a remarkably detailed scene, Jehan Georges Vibert's painting "Adding Up The Donations" captures a moment of quiet concentration amidst a colorful celebration. The artwork, rich in narrative and visual texture, portrays two clerical figures engrossed in financial matters. On the left, a monk diligently counts coins and notes on a makeshift outdoor table, symbolizing the meticulous task of accounting. His focus is intense, portraying a sense of responsibility and perhaps a hint of weariness. Next to him, a cardinal in vibrant red garb leans back thoughtfully, perhaps contemplating the figures or mulling over the uses for the gathered funds. His posture and expression add a reflective quality to the scene, contrasting with the active sorting by his companion. The setting is a rustic wooden structure adorned with an abundance of flowers and religious icons, suggesting a festival or a special religious event nearby. In the background, glimpses of other figures hint at a community involved and perhaps benefiting from the donations being tallied.Vibert's use of color and detail not only highlights the central figures but also enriches the story with elements of daily life and festivity, making "Adding Up The Donations" a complex narrative captured on canvas.

Jehan Georges Vibert or Jean Georges Vibert was a French academic painter.

He was born in Paris, the son of engraver and publisher Théodore Vibert, and grandson of the influential rose-breeder Jean-Pierre Vibert. He began his artistic training at a young age under the instruction of his maternal grandfather, engraver Jean-Pierre-Marie Jazet. Vibert was more interested in painting than engraving and entered the studio of Félix-Joseph Barrias and eventually the École des Beaux-Arts when he was sixteen. He remained at the École for six years under the instruction of historic painter François-Edouard Picot.
