More about this artwork

"Femmes fellah au bain" is a captivating artwork painted by the French Post-Impressionist artist Émile Bernard in 1900. This painting beautifully illustrates three figures, likely set beside a serene body of water, each engaged in a personal moment of tranquility. To the left, the eye is drawn to a woman standing unabashedly in her natural form. She is striking a classical pose with her hand behind her head, her relaxed posture and gentle expression suggesting a state of peacefulness. Beside her expresses a contrast; a woman in a flowing robe delicately holds a flower close to her heart, her gaze slightly downcast as if lost in thought.A third figure, a seated young man, occupies the foreground. He is depicted from the side, his attention turned away from the viewer, enhancing the intimate atmosphere of the scene. The flora dispersed around him, including vividly painted roses, injects a fresh, delicate element into the composition.Bernard's brushwork and use of rich, natural colors evoke the vibrancy of the surrounding landscape, reflecting the lushness of the location. His strategic placement of light accentuates the figures' forms and textures, creating a lively interaction of shadows and highlights that draws viewers deeper into the composition."Femmes fellah au bain" not only represents Bernard's artistic prowess but also reflects his interest in capturing the essence of human experience and the beauty of uncultivated landscapes.

Émile Henri Bernard (28 April 1868 – 16 April 1941) was a French Post-Impressionist painter and writer, who had artistic friendships with Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Eugène Boch, and at a later time, Paul Cézanne. Most of his notable work was accomplished at a young age, in the years 1886 through 1897. He is also associated with Cloisonnism and Synthetism, two late 19th-century art movements. Less known is Bernard's literary work, comprising plays, poetry, and art criticism as well as art historical statements that contain first-hand information on the crucial period of modern art to which Bernard had contributed.
