More about this artwork

Embarkation of St Paula, painted by the celebrated Claude Lorrain, is a masterpiece that eloquently captures the serene and melancholic moment of departure. In this remarkable composition, the viewer's attention is drawn to the central scene where St. Paula is depicted bidding farewell to her friends and family as she prepares to leave Ostia, embarking on a journey that will lead her to a holy life in Bethlehem. The painting is set against a beautifully detailed backdrop that showcases Lorrain’s skill in portraying light and atmospheric effects. The soft morning light gently illuminates the harbor, highlighting the architectural elegance of the Roman buildings and the calm waters. The tranquil sea is populated with a variety of ships, their sails barely stirring in the quiet air, enhancing the overall sense of stillness and contemplation.St. Paula herself is seen surrounded by her companions, her figure cloaked in blue, which vividly contrasts with the warm tones of the surrounding landscape. Her posture and expression are full of emotion, depicting both the sorrow of leaving behind her old life and the solemnity of her spiritual calling.Claude Lorrain’s use of color, light, and composition in Embarkation of St Paula not only narrates a story of personal sacrifice and devotional pursuit but also invites the viewer to linger within the scene, to experience the quiet beauty and the poignant farewells.

Claude Lorrain (1600 – 23 November 1682) was a French painter, draughtsman and etcher of the Baroque era. He spent most of his life in Italy, and is one of the earliest important artists, apart from his contemporaries in Dutch Golden Age painting, to concentrate on landscape painting. His landscapes are usually turned into the more prestigious genre of history paintings by the addition of a few small figures, typically representing a scene from the Bible or classical mythology.
