More about this artwork

"Sitzender Rückenakt am Ufer," a striking artwork by Otto Mueller circa 1925, invites viewers into a serene yet evocative scene. In this depiction, Mueller presents a nude figure seated by the shore, seen from behind. The figure is elegantly simplified, reflecting the artist's expressionistic style that emphasizes emotion over realistic detail. The background is minimalistic, with broad, gestural strokes that suggest a tranquil water landscape and sparse vegetation. The use of muted earth tones and bold outlines captures a sense of naturalism and raw beauty. This painting is characteristic of Mueller's work, focusing on the harmony between humans and nature, and showcases his ability for conveying deep contemplation and peaceful solitude through art. This piece, like many of Mueller's works, provides a window into the bohemian lifestyle and the yearning for simplicity and purity in an increasingly modern world. It remains a profound example of German Expressionism, emphasizing the subjective expression of inner experiences.

Otto Müller was a German painter and printmaker of the Die Brücke expressionist movement.

Mueller was born in Liebau (now Lubawka, Kamienna Góra County), Kreis Landeshut, Silesia. Between 1890 and 1892 he was trained in lithography in Görlitz and Breslau. From 1894 to 1896 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden and continued his study in Munich during 1898. He left Munich's academy after Franz von Stuck classified him as untalented.
