More about this artwork
Emile-Allain Séguy's work "Prismes-35" is a stunning piece of art, illustrating the artist's fascination with the interplay of forms and colors. The painting showcases a vivid abstract composition dominated by a rich, fiery red background. Angular and organic shapes intertwine, rendered in a palette of brown, cream, and mustard yellow, creating a dynamic and rhythmic visual experience. The forms in "Prismes-35" can evoke natural elements, such as leaves or flower petals, yet they remain distinctly geometric, hinting at the modernist trends of the early 20th century, which saw a blend of natural motifs and abstracted design. Séguy, known for his detailed illustrations and designs often inspired by the natural world, uses sharp contrasts and the juxtaposition of colors to draw the viewer's eye across the composition, highlighting his mastery of pattern and design. This piece, typical of Séguy's work from this period, not only resonates with the aesthetics of Art Deco but also hints at the developing movements of abstract art that were taking shape in Europe during the time. "Prismes-35" is a testament to Séguy's ability to transcend traditional boundaries and explore the potentials of color and form in evoking both the familiar and the fantastical.

Emile-Allain Séguy was a popular French designer throughout the Art Deco and Art Nouveau movements of the 1920s. Often confused with the French entomologist Eugene Séguy who was active during the same time period, E.A. Séguy designed primarily patterns and textiles and was heavily influenced by the natural world. He was particularly fond of the intricate patterns and beauty of insects (Eugene would have approved), which he saw as “mechanic wonders” that provided abundant inspiration for interior design (Schiff, 157).
